What To Do When the Heat Goes Out

Call it Murphy’s Law, or maybe just a little unluckiness, but we sometimes see heat pump issues in Ronkonkoma during the cooler months, when they’re necessary to keep you toasty. While you know the team at Cool Power LLC will always be there ASAP when you require us for a heat pump repair, there are some things you can do to double check a repair is important and save yourself some money if it’s not. We’ve collected this checklist of things to test before you give us a call.

  1. It may sound silly, but make sure everything is turned “on”. We’ve been to more than a few calls only to realize the thermostat or the heat pump itself is set to off.
    • Check your thermostat to make sure it’s on, fixed to the appropriate temperature and isn’t fixed to cool.
    • Then try changing the battery, if it has one.
    • If everything looks accurate, check your furnace switch (check your manual if you’re not sure where it is) and inspect your fuses and circuit breaker.
    • Double check that your gas is on.
  2. If the furnace still hasn’t kicked on, go back to your thermostat.
    • If it’s a programmable model, make sure it’s displaying the accurate time. If it thinks it’s morning when it’s really night, it may not switch your heat on because it doesn’t think you’re home.
  3. Is an obstruction causing your furnace to not work?
    • Check your air filters to ensure they’re not jamming things up.
    • Do you have any blocked ducts, vents or cool air openings?
    • Are all supply registers accessible?
    • Is your exhaust flue open?

If you’ve moved through this checklist and you’re still without heat, call Cool Power LLC at 631-246-4029 or schedule an appointment online and we’ll get your home back to the welcoming and cozy place it should be.
