Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter comes and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, the majority of them can be linked back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not addressed, your system could suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself a bit of time to view and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Envision the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system may be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises around the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies might notice increased symptoms. A couple other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
