Which Takes Less Energy? AC Fan On or in Auto?

During the high temperatures, using your air conditioning can be your highest monthly utility cost. So, it’s normal that you’re checking for ways to use less energy. That may include using an energy-efficient AC setting or even stepping up to an ENERGY STAR®-rated model through air conditioner installation.

Switching your air conditioning’s fan setting is an additional way you can conserve money.

Your air conditioner uses a fan to deliver the cool air it makes. You control this fan at your thermostat by changing it to “auto,” which indicates the fan will only be on when the air conditioner is cooling. Or you can switch it to “on,” which indicates it will operate all the time.

Does putting your AC on “fan” save energy in Ronkonkoma? This isn’t always the case. Generally, using your air conditioner’s fan all day is going to drive up your energy bill slightly.

But it also offers a few perks (and downsides) in relation to your residence’s comfort. Here’s why.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “On”

Having your air conditioner’s fan operate continuously can better balance your home’s comfort. This is ideal if you have a two-story house, since rooms upstairs can be hotter. It’s also ideal if you have difficulties with inconsistent cooling because of hot and cold areas.

It’s also beneficial if one of your family members has been diagnosed with allergies, asthma or other respiratory problems. That’s because the air is continuously being distributed and filtered. On the other hand, you may have to change your air filters more regularly.

Having the fan on constantly can also drive up your energy bills. It could also make the fan wear out faster and need air conditioning repair.

Your residence may also appear more moist. Air conditioning helps control humidity by drawing moisture from the air. But if the fan is always running, it’s harder for moisture to drain from the condenser outdoors.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “Auto”

This is the most energy-efficient setting, since the fan will only operate when your air conditioner does. It’s great if your house always seems the right temperature, whichever area you’re in.

There are a few disadvantages to using the auto setting. You might run into hot and cold locations in your house and reduced air quality. This is since air isn’t always flowing or being repeatedly filtrated.

On the flip side, you’ll require less energy and won’t have to change your air filter as regularly. Both are savings that can build up throughout the year, so you’ll have to consider what’s right for your home.
